Remove Duplicates from iTunes Automatically

If you are anything like me, you have thousands of songs in your iTunes library that you have collected over the years. After a while, all those songs can get pretty unorganized. I ended up with a ton of duplicate songs because I got music from a bunch of different places and added some of my music from an external hard drive twice. In addition to the duplicates, I also had a bunch of music that was missing artist information, and all of those songs were lumped together at the bottom of my playlist.

I started to go through my music manually, but it was taking forever. I decided to look for a program that would remove duplicates from iTunes automatically, and I found Rinse (formerly TidySongs). This program saved me a ton of time, and it did a lot of extra stuff that I was not even looking for. Not only did it get rid of all my duplicates, but it also filled in missing artists, years, and genres, fixed misspellings, and added album artwork.

I cannot recommend Rinse enough mainly because it saved me so much time. Not to mention that going through your songs manually is really really boring and starts to strain your eyes after a while. Rinse was really easy to use and cleaned up my library in a snap.

How to Remove Duplicates from iTunes Manually

If you want to get an idea of what you would have to do to remove your duplicates manually, I have included instructions. This is a good option for people who do not have a lot of duplicates or who have a small library.

1. In iTunes, select File, then Display Duplicates (or hold down the shift key in Windows, or the alt/option key in Mac and go to File, then Display Exact Duplicates to see songs that have the same name, artist, and album when you have multiple versions of the same song)

2. To sort songs by the date they were added to the library, click the “Date Added” column

3. Hold down the Shift key as you select each song you want to delete

4. Hit Delete or select Delete from the Edit menu and make sure to choose the option that moves the original file to the trash so it does not end up getting added back into the iTunes library

If you have thousands of songs in your library, you may have hundreds or even thousands of duplicates. This is when deleting duplicates from your iTunes library starts to become a pain. Who wants to sit at their computers for hours as they select songs and delete? I know that I started to get really frustrated when I tried to do it manually.

Save yourself the time and hassle if you have tons of duplicates and try out the free trial of Rinse. You will also enjoy the extra bonus of having all your missing artists, years, and genre information, plus album artwork added in. Hands down the best benefit is that you do not have to sit in front of your computer and do it yourself.
